The Greenville City Council has approved a new health insurance package for employees.
City Manager Dave Willey said multiple proposals were received after the original renewal offer was more than 50% higher than last year’s premiums. “That amount of premium, we don’t have it in our wherewithal to tolerate that,” Willey said. “So we had to begin to look for difference in coverage and differences in the employee participation in the cost in order to close that gap.”

The city was able to reduce the increase in health insurance to about 18 percent. The annual cost will be around $320,000.
Willey said the city will get some of that back in the self-insurance so the increase might get down to about 12 percent.
The insurance is being provided by the same company, Coventry, but it is a different policy.
