Comets Football Heading Back to Playoffs: Local Pairings

The Greenville Comets football team is back in the IHSA playoffs.

After barely missing the playoffs last year, it was learned Saturday night that the Comets were assigned to Class 4A and will play a first-round game at undefeated Columbia. The game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. The Comets are 5 and 4 for the season.

Greenville is one of five South Central Conference teams in the playoffs. The other four were assigned to Class 3A. They are Carlinville, who will host Wood River; Vandalia, who will host Tolono Unity; Pana, who will host Marshall; and Hillsboro, who will play at Williamsville.

Vandalia, Pana and Carlinville shared the conference title with 8 and 1 records. Hillsboro is 6 and 3.
In another local Class 4A matchup, Breese will be buzzing as its two teams meet in the first round. Mater Dei, 5 and 4, plays at Breese Central, 7 and 2. Taylorville plays at Alton Marquette, Carterville travels to Belleville Althoff and Bethalto goes to Rochester in Class 3A.

Highland, 8 and 1, is back in the playoffs in Class 5A. The Bulldogs will host Waterloo, 5 and 4. Other local 5A games will be Triad at Geneseo and Mohomet-Seymour at Centralia.

In Class 7A, Lincoln Way West plays at East St. Louis and Belleville West goes to Normal Community.

In Class 8A action, Oak Park River Forest will play at Edwardsville.

No local teams made the playoffs in Classes 1A, 2A or 6A.
