Effective August 31, Lou Lorton will retire as police chief of the Greenville Police Department.
Lorton joined the city police force in 1982 and has been chief of police for close to 21 years.
He said retirement is bittersweet and a bit scary, since this has been his job since he was 21 years old.

Lorton said he has been blessed with good officers and staff members in his department. Lorton also noted that he has worked with a number of great city managers during his tenure as chief.

Greenville City Manager Dave Willey said Lorton has been a dependable resource for him.
Willey hopes the position will be filled by the time Lorton leaves. Details of the application and selection process will be forthcoming. Willey reported candidates from inside and outside the department will be considered.
