Train Collision Claims 5 Lives

A collision with a train claimed the life of five people near Nokomis Wednesday evening.

District 9 Illinois State Police out of Springfield responded to the crash in the 1800 block of Christian County Road at Illinois Rt. 16 near Nokomis. State police report the train was traveling westbound parallel to Rt. 16. As the vehicle traveled southbound, approaching the railroad crossing, the driver, a 79 year old man from Pana, failed to yield. The car, a Chrysler Town & Country, was struck in its driver side by the train.

There were four passengers in addition to the drive in the car. Three occupants of the vehicle were pounced dead on the scene. The other two occupants were transported from the scene and later flown to St. Louis hospitals, where they succumbed to their injuries.

All occupants of the vehicle, males and females, were between the ages of 77 and 89 and all were from Pana.
