Ameren Illinois has placed automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, in crew trucks.
Karen Boulanger, Ameren Illinois director of safety, said the AEDs are there for Ameren workers and the general public.

She emphasized the program is not designed to replace the need for first responders, but, if needed in an emergency situation, a lineman could assist.
Boulanger said Ameren spent about $300,000 for the AEDs. She said the prospect of saving even one life affirms the importance of the investment.

In the Greenville and Hillsboro areas, there are seven AEDs in Ameren trucks.
