The Greenville football Comets knocked Carlinville out of the unbeaten ranks by upsetting the Cavaliers 35 to 28 Friday night in Greenville.
The Comets rallied for their 7th win in 9 games and now wait to find out Saturday who they will meet in the playoffs, which begin next weekend.
The Comets scored the first TD of the night in the Carlinville game, but the visitors came right back to take the lead with a touchdown and extra point kick.
Carlinville held a 21-14 lead at halftime.
The Cavaliers made it a 28-14 score with 4:40 left in the third quarter before the Comets began their rally.
12 seconds later, Christian Moss scored on a 65-yard run and Brian Prater’s extra point kick made it 28-21.
Hunter Robinson recovered an onside kick and before the quarter was over, the Comets had tied the game at 28 as Hunter Matthews scored on a five-yard run and Prater kicked the extra point.
The Comets’ defense did an outstanding job of shutting down the Carlinville offense, and the Comets got a big break when the Cavaliers misplayed a snap on a punt and GHS got the ball on the 13 yard line.
Moss scored the winning TD on a 5 yard run and Prater’s kick completed the scoring.
Moss continued to be dominating as a running back. He carried the ball 39 times for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Quarterback Wil Harnetiaux completed 3 of 10 passes for 69 yards, one a touchdown pass to Isaac Green for 67 yards.
Carlinville ran for minus 29 yards and had 170 yards passing.
Robinson led the defense with 10 tackles while Matt Kalous had 9.
Moss has a total of 2,204 rushing yards for the season, making him only the second Comet in history to gain over 2,000 yards in a season.
