Derleth Pleads Guilty

A man facing Madison County charges of aggravated kidnapping and parental abduction, stemming from an incident last year, has pled guilty to two charges in Bond County Circuit Court.

Christopher Derleth, age 40, of Granite City, was in court Friday and entered negotiated pleas of guilty to charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and perjury.

He was sentenced to a total of 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Forty years are for the sexual assault charge and five years are for perjury. The terms run consecutively.

The assault charge alleged that in 2015, Derleth had sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13. Bond County State’s Attorney Chris Bauer said it is believed the action occurred while the defendant was living in or near Greenville, between June 1 and October 25 of 2015.

The perjury charge alleged that during a legal adoption case, Derleth submitted a false affidavit, indicating he had never been convicted of a crime, when in fact, he had been convicted in Madison County of obscenity and criminal damage to property.

State’s Attorney Bauer said Derleth must serve at least 85 percent of the 45-year prison sentence.

Friday, Bauer presented the court a victim impact statement written by the victim. He said with the negotiated pleas, the victim avoids having to testify in court. The state’s attorney said Derleth received a substantial sentence and Bauer believes it was a good outcome.

Derleth is still charged in Madison County with aggravated kidnapping and parental abduction. In September of last year, Derleth, his 13-year-old adopted daughter and her infant son were the subjects of a nationwide search which ended on September 24 when they were found in West Virginia.

Upon his arrest, the charges were filed in Madison County and later the Bond County charges were filed.
