Highland Man Wounded, Area On Soft Lockdown

UPDATED STORY with additional information…

At approximately 10:00 am Tuesday morning, Highland Police responded to a call about shots fired at a residence in the 1000 Block of Cedar Street in Highland. Almost simultaneously Highland Police received a 911 call from a person inside the residence.

The Belleville News Democrat reports the man who had called from inside the residence said he was attacked with a knife while he lay in bed.

Officers were met outside by the 911 caller who had a wound to his chest. The caller told officers he had been attacked by an unknown white male with a bald head. The caller said that he had fired 2 shots at his attacker but was unclear as to whether the attacker was inside the residence or where the firearm was located. Officers established a perimeter around the house after failing to make contact with anyone inside the residence and called for assistance from the state response team.

During this time, the Highland Police Department notified and evacuated the surrounding residences, and placed a nearby daycare on soft lockdown out of an abundance of caution. At no time was there any evidence of a threat to anyone outside of the residence in question.

The News Democrat reports that as tactical crews were leaving, police had either spoken to or had taken into custody everyone involved in the incident.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene technicians have been called to assist.

The caller was treated and released from the hospital and the incident remains under investigation.
