The City of Greenville’s off-highway vehicle program is underway.
Approved by the city council in November, the program allows permitted golf carts or side-by-side units to be driven on city roads. Normal four-wheeled ATVs are not allowed.
Greenville City Manager Dave Willey said permits went on sale January 1 and a few have been issued.

Permits are $50 per unit. Willey said the vehicles cannot be operated on any state highway, so crossings have been designated in the city. Crossings are at Idler Lane at Rt. 140, Elm Street and Highway 40, Harris Avenue and Elm Street, and Third Street at Winter.

Motorists will notice yellow signs at the four crossings.
The off-highway vehicles must be insured. Drivers must be 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
