Two-Vehicle Accident On Rt. 51 Sends Two To Hospitals


Illinois State Police responded Thursday, January 18, at 8:13 p.m.,to a two-car accident on Rt. 51 about one mile south of Patoka.

According to the report, a Nissan Altima, driven by Max D. Maxfield, age 35, of Smith Grove, Kentucky, was northbound on Rt. 51 near Britt Road, when the car drove into the southbound lane, into the path of a Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by Dwight W. Snyder, age 60, of Sandoval. The truck driver swerved to the left to avoid the car but both vehicles struck each other on the passenger sides. Maxfield’s car struck the guardrail and the semi truck swerved to the right after contact and left the roadway to the west side.

There was extensive damage to the car and Maxfield required extrication. He was taken by helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital.

Snyder was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.

Maxfield was cited for alleged improper lane usage.
