Wilbur Wayne Berry


Wilbur Wayne Berry, age 95 of Mt. Vernon, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

Mr. Berry was born on September 30, 1922, in Carterville, Illinois, to Wilbur “Bill” and Nell (Mattingly) Berry. Wayne was a graduate of Carterville High School and later attended business college in Chicago. In 1944, he joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country during World War II.

Wayne became a Mason in 1963 with Fellowship Lodge #89 in Marion, Illinois. He served 3 terms as Worshipful Master of Scott Lodge #79 in Carlyle. He also held office in Grand Lodge of State of Illinois as State Masonic Educational Officer. Wayne was a Masonic Lecturer, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a Shriner. He remained very active in Masonic work throughout Southern Illinois, obtaining honorable memberships in numerous Masonic Lodges.

Wayne’s love for travel was reflected in his employment career. He was a semi driver for many years for multiple companies, including ABF and Mayflower. He retired from Yellow Freight System after 26 years with the company. At the time of his retirement, he held the position of Safety Supervisor with the company he truly loved. His occupation allowed him to travel from coast to coast in every state except Hawaii and Alaska.

Wayne had many interests in life. In addition to traveling, he enjoyed riding horses and flying small planes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carlyle.

Wayne is survived by his wife – Mary Smit Berry of Mt. Vernon; three children – Steven Berry and wife Marilyn of Buncombe, Deborah Bradley and husband Steve of Rockwood, Michigan, and Javonna Berry of Palm Harbor, Florida; seven grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother – Glen Berry; four sisters – Kathleen Geistdorfer, Barbara Harris, Joyce Jean Berry, and Donna Louise Berry; a son – Anthony Berry; a daughter – Carol Hines; and a grandson – Steven Burton.

A funeral service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home on Monday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 16, at Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Berry are suggested to Scott Lodge #79, Carlyle or to the Mt. Vernon Airport and will be received at Zieren Funeral Home.
