The Greenville Bluejays are the champions of IESA Class 3A eighth grade boys basketball.
Playing in the title game Thursday night, Greenville defeated Germantown Hills 57 to 48 to claim the first team state championship in Bond County Unit 2 history.
Head Coach Parker Manhart was proud of his team. Jeff Leidel talked to him after the game.
Greenville jumped out to a 14 to 0 lead to begin the game and maintained control the rest of the way, leading 18 to 10 after one quarter, 30 to 20 at halftime and 41 to 29 after three quarters.
The Bluejays shot 56 percent from the field.
Leading the Bluejays’ offense was Isaac Turner with 30 points. Jack Schaufelberger posted 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nathan Grull scored 8 and blocked 3 shots.
Turner had 8 rebounds, Peyton McCullough 4 rebounds and Davin Johnson dished out five assists.
Turner set a new 8th grade Class 3A record for points in a state final tourney, scoring 83 in the 3 games.
Other members of the team are Dylan Rasler, Steven Jack, Jaylon Betts. Quinton Cain, Mason Barnes, Gavin Wilson and Cameron Moore.
A parade to honor the Jays will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., starting on the downtown square and ending at the junior high school.
The Greenville Bluejays conclude the season with a 24 and 2 record and a state championship. Congratulations Greenville Bluejays.
