After finishing second in the state tournament last year as 7th graders, this year’s team is back in the championship game as 8th graders.
The Greenville Bluejays won twice Saturday in the IESA Class 3A 8th grade finals, and will play Thursday night at Tolono for the state title. The opponent will be Germantown Hills. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WGEL.
In a semifinal thriller against Winfield Wheaton Christian, the Bluejays came from behind to grab a 45 to 44 win.
Steven Jack sank a 10-foot shot from the left baseline to give the Bluejays the lead with 36 second remaining. Those were the only 2 points of the game for Jack, but ended up being the biggest of the night.
Winfield Wheaton had three short shots in the closing seconds, but was unable to score.
Isaac Turner had an outstanding game for the Bluejays, pouring in 31 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He also blocked 6 shots. Jack Schaufelberger totaled 5 assists and Peyton McCullough had 4.
In the quarterfinal game against Monticello, the Bluejays trailed in the first quarter, but took control of the game by outscoring the Sages 21 to 6 in the second period.
The final score was 56 to 30.
Turner led the winners with 22 points while McCullough sank 5 three-pointers for 15 points.
Turner finished with another 11 rebounds plus 4 steals. Davin Johnson handed out 8 assists.
The Bluejays go into Thursday’s state title game with a 23 and 2 record.
