Leora Martha Mueller Thouvenin

Leora Martha Mueller Thouvenin, age 100 of Carlyle, passed away at Cedarhurst Senior Living in Breese on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

Mrs. Thouvenin was born on December 14, 1917, in Frogtown, Illinois, a daughter of Joseph and Martha (Remmert) Mueller. Leora married Lester Leon “Butch” Thouvenin on May 8, 1940, and they were married for 68 years. During WWII Lester was stationed at Fort Hood in the state of Washington. After the war ended they returned to Carlyle in the early 1950’s and opened L & L Dry Cleaning. Leora managed the day to day operations and bookkeeping while Lester did the maintenance and upkeep. The dry-cleaning shop was closed in the early 1970’s.

Leora was an accomplished seamstress. She spent many hours embroidering, sewing, quilting and knitting. Her other hobbies included reading, walking and ceramics. Together, Butch and Leora loved to jitterbug, square dance and travel as much as they could. In the late 1970’s, they combined their talents to reupholster all the pews in St. Mary’s church in Carlyle, IL. As an active member of Saint Mary’s Church, she taught CCD classes and sang in the choir. Another passion she had was volunteering for The Reading Link.

Nothing was as important to Leora and Butch as family. They helped to remodel all their children’s homes. Butch and Leora demonstrated to their grandchildren how much they meant to them by taking them hiking, fishing, boating, water skiing, having them spend the night, and cooking their favorite foods. When asked if Leora had any words of wisdom to share, she said, “Take care of one another, love one another, help others and stay busy.”

Leora is survived by her children – Lester Joseph “Butch Jr” Thouvenin and wife Nancy, and Martha Jane Rosinski “Janie” or “Marty” and husband Timothy; a daughter-in-law – Marjorie Thouvenin; her grandchildren – Bradley Thouvenin and wife Michelle, Bryan Thouvenin and wife Heather, Matt Brown, Noelle Haynes and husband Jerry, Renee Chernick and husband Max, Lucas Thouvenin, Curt Rosinski and wife Humaira Ikhlaq Rosinski, Laura Smith and husband Brian, and Jessica Thompson and husband Beau; and seven great grandchildren – Aiden Thouvenin, Tony and Olivia Saenz, Paige and Paxton Chernick, and Sofia and Ayra Rosinski.

Leora was preceded in death by her husband – Lester “Butch” Thouvenin, a son – Phillip Wayne Thouvenin, her parents – Joseph and Martha Mueller, her great grandchild – Roman Bradley Thouvenin; a sister – Velma Mueller Tebbe and her husband Monroe ”Bud”, and a brother – Joseph Mueller and his wife Alice.
