The Greenville University men’s basketball played in the first round of the NCAA Division III (3) national tournament Friday night at Augustana College in Rock Island.
The Panthers had a big lead in the first half, but couldn’t hold on. The final score was Augustana 123 Greenville 111.
Greenville led by 19 points with 6:26 left in the first half and held a 67 to 54 margin at halftime.
Augustana crept back into the game in the second half. The score was tied at 93 with 8:52 left in the game, then Augustana went on a 20 to 4 run to lead 113 to 97.
For the game, the Vikings made 33 of 46 free throws. G.U. was 18 of 33 at the line. The winners shot 55 percent from the field while the Panthers had a 42 percent overall field goal mark. They held a 15 to 8 advantage in three pointers made.
Greenville had six players score in double figures. Sonti Grady and Isiah Price had 18 apiece. Vari Boney posted 17, Josias Parker had 16, Johari Dix scored 13 and Adam Warren had 10.
The Panthers end their season with a 19 and 9 record. They were the first men’s team in G.U. history to advance to the national tournament.
Greenville was the regular season champion and tournament champion in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
