Stella Solis, age 96 of Carlyle, passed away at the Carlyle Healthcare Center on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
Mrs. Solis was born on March 5, 1922, in Carlyle, Illinois to the late Walter and Catherine “Cassie” (Cahoon) Thompson. She married Oscar E. Solis in Neosho, Missouri on July 25, 1942, and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1996.
Mrs. Solis was a life-long resident of Carlyle and a member of the Carlyle First United Methodist Church. She worked at Wee Walker Shoe Factory and later enjoyed meeting with people while working at the A&W Root Beer Restaurant. Her children, grandchildren, and family were her life and she loved the time spent cooking for them. She also enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
Mrs. Solis is survived by her daughters – Sharon Lager and husband Tom of Birmingham, Alabama and Carol Keister and husband Larry of Springfield, Illinois; her grandchildren – Kristina Caniglia, Tom Lager, Jr., Stephanie Schwalbe and husband Barry, Jennifer Howard and husband Jim, Erin Fairfield and husband Ryan, and Courtney Schroder and husband Neil; her great grandchildren – Catherine, Andrew, and John Caniglia, Raegan, Tyler, Analiese, Cadon, Asher, Emma, Isabel, and Alexandra Schroder, Lauren and Hudson Fairfield, Ambre Franklin and husband Scott, and Travis Howard; and a great great grandson – Ryder Franklin. Stella is also survived by a sister – Betty Hamel and husband Ralph of Peoria; and 3 sisters-in-law – Bernice Thompson of Carlyle, Margaret Kruep and husband Bob of Salem, and Margaret Solis of Sarasota, Florida.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Solis was preceded in death by her sisters – Helen Rommelmann and husband Clarence, Delores Schilling and husband Robert, Joan Spicer and husband Ken, and Beverly Ann Thompson; her brothers – Elmer Thompson and wife Betty, Harry Thompson, and Gene Thompson; and her in-laws – Nick and Cele Solis, Stella and Delbert Quitmeyer, and John “Benny” Solis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Interment will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Solis are suggested to the Carlyle First United Methodist Church or to Vitas Hospice and will be accepted at Zieren Funeral Home.
