Marianne (Mimi) P. Vonnahme

Marianne (Mimi) P. Vonnahme, age 91 of Carlyle, passed away at her home on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

Mrs. Vonnahme was born in East St. Louis, Illinois on April 20, 1926, a daughter of G. Edwin Popkess and Mona (Timlin) Popkess. She married Conrad B. Vonnahme, Jr. on June 19, 1948, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in East St. Louis.

Marianne attended grammar and high school in East St. Louis and graduated from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri in 1944. Prior to her marriage, Marianne taught in the East St. Louis school system and during her summers kept busy working at Arrowhead Lodge in Lake Ozark, Missouri one of her family’s businesses. In 1960 the Vonnahme family moved to Carlyle and Mimi was active in managing the Carlyle Pharmacy along with her husband until 1968.

Education was always important to Mimi and while raising her six children, she continued her college work at Southern Illinois Edwardsville and graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois. She returned to the classroom while completing her degree in Education and taught elementary grades for over 25 years in Breese and Carlyle, retiring from All Saints School in 1990.

Mimi’s passions were her family, her church, golf and bridge. Holiday and other family gatherings with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids around a table of family traditional menus were a highlight. She was active in St. Mary Church throughout her life in Carlyle. Into her early 80s she would be out on the golf links with girlfriends. But her great passion was bridge. Throughout her life she enjoyed playing bridge with family and friends and in her later years she was active in two bridge groups playing weekly with lifelong friends in Carlyle. Her “Bridge friends” were always special to Mimi.

Mimi is survived by 3 sons – Mark Vonnahme and wife Marilyn of Darien, Illinois, Paul Vonnahme of Koriyama City, Japan and John Vonnahme of Carlyle; 3 daughters – Kathy Mueller and husband Bill of Naperville, Illinois, Monica Snavely and husband Chuck of Mountain, Wisconsin and Lynn Marini and husband Mike of Freeport, Illinois; 12 Grandchildren – Kristen Sienkiewicz and husband Chris, Kurt Vonnahme and wife Jill, Eric Mueller and wife Julie, Charles Snavely and wife Heather, Adam Snavely, Mari Anne, Richard and Jonathan Vonnahme, Stephanie Vonnahme and spouse Carolan Cross, Erin Vonnahme and husband Lindy, Alaina Meeker and husband Wes, Matt Marini and wife Tasha; 13 Great Grandchildren – Luke and Sydney Sienkiewicz, Kate and Nora Vonnahme, Ethan, Zachary and Garrett Mueller, Emma and Lucas Snavely, Alison and Whitney Meeker and Taya and Shane Marini.
