Here are the local Memorial Day events we’ve been notified of:
The annual Greenville Memorial Day Service will be Monday, May 28.
It begins at 10 a.m. in front of the mausoleum at Montrose Cemetery.
The featured speaker will be Bond County State’s Attorney Chris Bauer.
The Greenville Municipal Band will open its 2018 season with a performance at the program. It will play a patriotic mini-concert at 9:45 a.m. and then perform songs during the Memorial Day Program.
Pastor Curtis Flake of the Greenville First United Methodist Church will give the invocation and benediction.
The service will include the reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and General John Logan’s orders pertaining to Memorial Day, plus the Pledge of Allegiance.
A veterans firing squad will give a salute to the dead.
Those attending are urged to bring lawn chairs.
In case of inclement weather, the program will be at the Greenville First United Methodist Church.
The Greenville VFW will host their annual Memorial Day Fish Fry, Monday, May 28 from 11 AM to 2 PM at the post home. A child’s plate is $4 and an adult plate lunch is $4. Sandwiches will be sold for $4. Tea and coffee will be available.
Mulberry Grove American Legion Post 1180 Memorial Day activities begin Saturday, May 26, at 9:00 a.m. with putting flags at veterans’ graves in Mulberry Grove and Taylor Cemeteries. Legion members will also raise 42 flags in the Village of Mulberry Grove.
Mulberry Grove American Legion members will raise 130 casket flags of deceased veterans Sunday, May 27, at 9:00 a.m., weather permitting, in the Avenue of Flags in the Mulberry Grove Cemetery. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Everyone is invited to help raise and lower the flags. For more information, call 217-534-2307.
The Sunnyside Cemetery Memorial Day chicken dinner is Sunday, May 27, in the Sorento Firehouse. Serving is from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and the cost is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 4-12, and children ages 3 and younger may eat free.
Memorial Day Services in Robinson Cemetery north of Pocahontas are scheduled for Sunday, May 27, at 2:00 p.m. The service includes a color guard, changing of the flag, firing squad, and bugler playing taps. For more information, call 669-2757.
There is a Memorial Day service Monday, May 28, at 11:00 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial in Pocahontas. Bring your lawn chairs. If it rains, the service will be in the Pocahontas Methodist Church. For more information, call Kent at 669-2115.
There is a Memorial Weekend breakfast Sunday, May 27, in the Panama Community Center. Serving is from 7:00 a.m. – noon and the cost is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 11 and younger.
