The Greenville Comets post-season came to an end Wednesday night in the Class 2A sectional semifinals at Flora.
The Comets got off to a lead, but couldn’t hold on against Staunton. The Bulldogs won 13 to 7 to move on to the sectional championship game Saturday against Teutopolis.
Greenville led by three runs after the first inning as Jonathan Barnes hit a run-scoring double, and Trent Hlafka belted a two-run homer.
The Comets added two runs in the third with Barnes delivering another RBI hit. That increased the GHS margin to 5 to 1.
Staunton made it 5 to 4 after four innings, then Greenville plated two runners in the fifth to lead 7 to 4.
A big sixth inning for Staunton determined the final outcome. The Bulldogs ripped three home runs, one a three-run shot and one a grand slam. By the time the final out was recorded Staunton had scored nine times.
Comets hits in the game included two by Barnes and one apiece by Mason Johnson and Hlafka. Drew Frey scored three runs, Barnes crossed the plate twice, and Johnson and Hlafka also scored.
The Comets end their season with a regional championship and 16-18 and 1 record.
