In accordance with a City of Greenville ordinance, sewer and water rates increased as of May 1.
This year, the rates rose 1.89 percent.
City Manager Dave Willey said the rates adjust every year by 80 percent of the consumer price index. He said more frequent, smaller increases are easier for consumers than large increases put in place less frequently.

Since the ordinance automatically allows rates to be adjusted, no action is necessary each year by the council.
