Gene File aged 92 of Pocahontas, passed away at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2018 at home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018 at the Smith Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Smith Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the Bond Co Veterans organization including the Pocahontas American Legion Post. Friends may call at the Church from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday. For those who desire memorials in Gene’s memory may be made to the Smith Grove Church, the Smith Grove Cemetery or to the Bond County Hospice at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home or at the Church.
Wallace Gene File the son of Mayre Koontz File and Wallace File was born on the File Farm south of Smithboro. He was raised on farms near Smithboro, Mulberry Grove and Greenville where he attended various one room schools and Greenville High School with the class of 1944. Gene answered his country’s call by joining the United States Navy on January 26, 1944 serving aboard the USS CORONIS overseas. He was awarded the American Area Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 1 Star, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was Honorably discharged on May 27, 1946.
Gene returned home and had a route for the Bruno Bakery for several years, drove the Pocahontas school bus until they were consolidated, then worked for MoorMans Manufacturing as a salesman for their seed until his retirement in 1982. Gene and Della purchased their farm south of Pocahontas and he grain and livestock (Hogs) farmed all those years to the present.
Gene and Della L. Massey were united in marriage on March 12, 1947 by Rev. Clarence Barger in Virginia,Illinois and have enjoyed over 71 years together. Della survives as do their three children: Rev. Loren (Cheryl) File of Greenville, Jerry (Terry) File of Pocahontas, Marcia (the late Duane) Duffey of Altamont, 6 grandchildren: Shawn (Shelly) File, Megan (Rev. Dan) Layman, Rev. Jerad (Amy) File, Erin (Jake) Largent, Rev. Justin (Kara) Guffey, Rev. Christopher (Kellie) Guffey, and 17 great- grandchildren: Delaney, Eli, Caitney, Beckett, Abigail, Benjamin, Adie, Amanda, Joshua, Ethan, Kyla, Judah, Eliza, Ezra, Isaiah, Zariah, and Georgia.
Gene is preceded in death by his two great-grandchildren: Isabella age 21 months, Jonathan at birth, his parents, and is the last of his generation being preceded in death by: Margie Brown, Marilyn Traub, Merle File, Clarence Ervene File, Oliver File and Harry File. He is survived by inlaws including Mary File, Ethel File, and Winnie File.
Gene was a 4 H leader for several years and joined the Smith Grove Baptist Church in 1947, where he has served as Deacon since 1959, was a greeter, and active promoter of Awanis
