Friday afternoon, just after 3 PM, the Smithboro Fire Protection District responded to a report of a car on fire at the 50 mile marker on the westbound lanes of I-70.

According to Fire Chief Bryant Briggs, crews arrived to find the car fully involved. It took extra time for personnel to arrive on the scene due to traffic being backed up to the entrance ramp at the 52 mile marker.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is suspected to be electrical.

The Mulberry Grove Fire Protection District was called to provide manpower and a brush unit.
