Ontario, Canada Man Killed In I-70 Accident

A man from Ontario, Canada was killed in a vehicle/pedestrian accident on Interstate 70 Wednesday night, in Fayette County.

According to Illinois State Police, the accident occurred at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes at the 55.5 mile marker. The preliminary investigation revealed a semi-truck and trailer, driven by 46 year-old Peter F. Peters of Elmira, Ontario, Canada was parked along the right shoulder. State Police say Peters was standing outside his vehicle on the driver’s side near the middle of the trailer when an unknown truck tractor and white box semi-trailer sideswiped Peter’s vehicle.

Peters was pinched between both units and was fatally injured. State Police say, after sideswiping Peter’s vehicle, the unknown unit continued eastbound on Interstate 70 leaving the crash.

Interstate 70 was closed for several hours with traffic routed off at the Mulberry Grove exit onto Rt. 40. The eastbound lanes were re-opened about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
