Illinois State Police have released more information on the fatal accident that closed westbound I-70 near Vandalia Wednesday afternoon.
The preliminary investigation indicates a semi truck, driven by 42 year old Robert A. Todoran, of Louisiana, was traveling west on I-70 at approximately one mile east of Vandalia, where traffic was stopped due to road construction. Todoran allegedly failed to reduce speed to avoid accident and struck a Ford Fusion driven by 27 year old Jon P. Wingo, of Springfield, causing a chain reaction involving a total of six vehicles.
Todoran’s semi truck left the roadway and traveled down an embankment, where the trailer became engulfed in flames. Todoran was trapped inside the truck and was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Fayette County Coroner.
Wingo, the driver of the Ford Focus, and two of his passengers, a 14 year old female from Brownstown, and 51 year old Rachel M. Wingo of Brownstown, were all transported to Fayette County Hospital.
Drivers of the other four vehicles involved in the crash are all from out of state and none were injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit, the Illinois State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the Fayette County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police District 12.
