Boys Golf Opens Season With 7th Place Finish

The Greenville High School boy’s golf team opened its season Thursday in a tournament hosted by Effingham St. Anthony.

A total of 12 teams were in the tournament with St. Anthony and Hillsboro having two each.

The Comets placed seventh as a team.

Leading the GHS golf group was Sam Knebel with an 18-hole round of 84, Gaite Brauns with a 91, and Christian Bauer at 95. Also playing for the Comets were Ryan Heath, Gage Zykan and Leno Caldieraro.

One of Hillsboro’s team placed second with the other one 12th, and Vandalia finished 6th.

Hillsboro’s Alex Eichoff was the tourney’s medalist with a score of 71. Alex White of Hillsboro placed second individually with a score of 75 while Ben Strullmyer and Dane Huber of Hillsboro tied for 6th and 9th respectively.

The Comet boys play a five team match at the Shoal Creek Golf Course in Raymond on Monday, go to Governor’s Run Course in Carlyle on Tuesday to play Trenton Wesclin, and host Lincolnwood and Ramsey-Nokomis Thursday at the Greenville Country Club.
