Edwin Hemann


Edwin Hemann, age 99 of Hamel, IL passed away on Friday, August 10, 2018 at his residence in Hamel, IL.

He was born on Tuesday, February 25, 1919 in New Douglas Township in Madison County, Illinois.

He was the son of August F. and Minnie (Keiser) Hemann.

He was married to Bettie D. Rosenthal on November 11, 1948 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Douglas, IL. She preceded him in death on Sunday, December 18, 2011.

Edwin’s education included school in New Douglas, IL. Two years of High School in Livingston, IL where he later achieved his G.E.D. equivalency. He also attended college at Alton SIU and the SIU Edwardsville campus when it opened.

Edwin served our country in the United States Army during World War II in California, Hawaii, Guadalcanal, New Britian, and the Philippines from June of 1941 to September of 1945. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In May of 2017 he was privileged to take the Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Edwin began working at Kraigher’s Store in New Douglas, IL for 5 years. He had a lifelong career centered around the farming industry as an employee for 16 years with the Madison County Farm Service in Edwardsville, IL and 6 years with the American Cyanamid/Continental Grain Company in Staunton, IL. In 1970, Edwin and his wife Bettie became owner/operators of the Worden Elevator in Worden, IL; They retired from ownership of the elevator in 1993.

He was a member of the Worden American Legion Post 564 in Worden, IL and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville, IL;

His favorite pastimes where reading and watching or listening to Cardinal baseball games. He was publicly acknowledged as one of their oldest fans.

Edwin is survived by his Daughter: Jean Hand, her husband Michael of Fort Myers, FL; His Granddaughter: Sheila Hamlin (Robert Chulka) of Livingston, IL; Great Granddaughter: Lauren Hamlin-Chulka of Livingston, IL; Sister: Rolene Kraigher of New Douglas, IL; Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, his Wife, Brothers: Lorenz Hemann, Harold Hemann, Walter Hemann, and Wilmer Hemann; Sisters: Frieda DeVries, Edna Suhre, Irene Weishaupt, and Leona Suhre.

A Visitation for Edwin Hemann will be held on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 4 to 7 PM at the Lesicko Funeral Home located at 271 N 2nd Street in Livingston, IL 62058.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 11:30 AM at the Lesicko Funeral Home in Livingston, IL with Rev. John Shank officiating.

Burial will be in the New Douglas Cemetery in New Douglas, IL with Full Military Honors provided by the Worden American Legion Post 564.

Memorial Contributions in memory of Edwin Hemann can be made to the New Douglas Cemetery.
