Judith “Judy” Ulmer Debatin, age 75 of Greenville, Passed away at 7:36 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2018 at Barnes Hospital Park View Towers in St. Louis where she had been a patient for a few days.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ward Sussenbach officiating. Interment will follow in Smith Grove Cemetery next to her husband Richard W. “Abe” Debatin. The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday evening. For those who desire memorials in Judy’s memory may be made to Smith Grove Cemetery.
Judith Elizabeth Ulmer, the daughter of Edward Wallace Ulmer and Mary Elizabeth Schmollinger Ulmer, was born on December 8, 1943 in Highland. Judy grew up on the Ulmer farm south of Smith Grove and attended the Smith Grove and Potts one room schools and Greenville Junior High. Judy graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1961 and went on to graduate from Greenville College in 1964. She taught in Carlyle High School for 4 years then joined Greenville High School where she taught for over 30 years in Girls Physical Education. Judy coached Track, Cheer leaders for 30 years, started the Post Prom and homecoming programs, worked with the Prom for 30 years, retiring from Greenville High School in 2000. In retirement Judy volunteered at the Bond County Senior Citizen’s center helping with the Box Lunches and annual Health Fair. Judy worked at the Greenville Super wash for the past 8 years.
Judith and Richard Wegman Debatin were united in marriage on April 11, 1964 at the Greenville First Baptist Church by Rev. Robert Mallicoat and enjoyed over 46 years together before his death on July 26, 2010.Judy is survived by her brother James Edward (Lisa) Ulmer of Greenville, sister Mary Jane (Dennis) File of Springfield, brother-in-law William and Marilyn Debatin, sister-in-law Becky Debatin, nieces and nephews including Jim (Ruthie) File, Denise (Travis) Blaney, Marianne (Paul) Peterson, Angie (Jeff) Ulmer, Julie (Chris) LaFrance, Jackie Debatin, BJ (Stacey) Debatin, Brian (Kathy) Debatin, Mary (Bob) Merod, Step nephews: Cory (Sarah) Fisher, and Kelcey Fisher Great nieces and nephews including:Kayleigh Blaney, Carson Blaney, Ava Peterson, Luke Peterson, Emilia Peterson, William (Beth) Debatin III, Wane Debatin, Phillip LaFrance, Dennis Debatin, Mallary LaFrance, Luke Merod, Madelyn Merod, Step Nieces: Bailey Fisher, Adaline Fisher, Chelsea Mowery, Devon Mowery, and Emma Mowery Great Great Nephews:Bryson Debatin and Logan Debatin
Judy is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband and brother-in-law Ron Debatin.
Judy is a member of many organizations including: The Bond County Fair where she served as Secretary for 19 years, Bond County Antique Machinery Club, Gateway Farm Toy Club, IH Southern Illinois Chapter 32, Bond County Retired Teachers, I.E.A., N.E A. and her Church, the Smith Grove Baptist Church.
