Dorothy M. (Dot) Basler

Dorothy M. (Dot) Basler, 95, of Highland, IL died Sunday, January 13, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born December 15, 1923 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Edna (Buckner) and Robert Stephenson. She married Floyd J. Basler on February 8, 1947, in Highland, IL who preceded her in death on January 20, 1993.

Dorothy grew up in Cape Girardeau, MO and graduated from Cape Girardeau High School in 1941. She moved to St. Louis, MO shortly after to work at the Curtis-Wright Airplane factory where she met Floyd. She moved to Portland, OR and worked at Kaiser Shipyards for several years during WWII while Floyd served in the Merchant Marines. Upon returning to Highland after the war, she worked as a bookkeeper at Basler Electric until her children were born. She and Floyd resided in Naples, FL during the winters for many years. She was very active and enjoyed golfing regularly into her late 80’s. Reading novels and playing bridge with several clubs were also favorite activities. She was a member of St Paul Catholic Church, Highland Country Club, Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, IL and Fox Fire Country Club in Naples, FL.

Survivors include her son – Michael (Sandra) Basler, Highland IL and daughter – Sharon (Roger) Potthast, Pocahontas, IL. Grandchildren – Joseph Basler, Ian Basler, Nicole (DJ) Hendricks, Kyle (Megan Cravatta) Potthast, Luke Potthast, Stephen (Kara Benden) Cooper, and Kristin Potthast. Great-grandchildren – Chase Harmon, Trent Harmon, Drayton Potthast, Avery Hendricks, Brantley Hendricks, Bryla Potthast and Jaxson Cooper. Nieces and nephews – William (Marge) Basler, Carly Ann Maurer, Cindy (Bill) Ritter, Lester (Joyce) Stephenson, Jr. and Gloria (Neal) Fallers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her father-in-law Emil Basler, her mother-in-law Rose Basler, her step mother-in-law Dorothy I. Basler, her brother Lester Stephenson Sr. and sister-in-law Evelyna Stephenson Senn, brothers-in-law Carl Basler and Marvin Lory, and sisters-in-law Doris Basler and Gertrude Lory.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, January 18, 2019 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Meridith Funeral Home in Highland. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 18, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Church in Highland, with Fr. Pat Jakel officiating. Burial to follow in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Highland.

Memorials may be made to the Highland Louis Latzer Memorial Public Library, Highland Country Club (to benefit the Highland High School Girl’s Golf Team), or a charity of the donor’s choice. Envelopes will be available at the service.
