Charges Filed In Glen Carbon Carjacking Case

Tony J. Turner

Charges have been filed against a 59-year-old man from Granite City for a carjacking in Glen Carbon.

On March 16, 2019, a witness observed two men breaking into the jewelry counter at Sam’s in Glen Carbon, allegedly stealing rings which caused the alarm to sound. One suspect, 53 year old Billy L. Walker, Jr., of Hillsboro, MO, fled on foot with a witness chasing behind. Walker fired a gun at the witness then carjacked a vehicle, which he drove at a high rate of speed into Macoupin County. A foot pursuit ensued, during which Walker shot at an Illinois State Police trooper, who was struck in the hand. The Trooper returned fire and fatally struck the suspect.

The second man involved in the theft at Sam’s, 59 year old Tony J. Turner, of Granite City, allegedly fled Sam’s in a red four door vehicle. Glen Carbon Police were able to get the plate number of the car that Turner was driving and through a witness identifying him through images from the surveillance video at Sam’s they were able to later apprehend Turner at his home in Granite City on May 14.

Turner was charged in Madison County Court this week with alleged Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class X felony; alleged Attempted Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, a Class 1 felony; alleged Attempted Vehicular Hijacking and alleged Burglary, both Class 2 felonies; and alleged Conspiracy to Commit Burglary, a Class 3 felony.

Turner’s bail was set at $750,000. If convicted he could face up to 6-30 years for the Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking and a possible 15 year enhancement for the use of a firearm.
