Comets Headed To Regional Championship

The Greenville Comets are playing for the championship of their own Class 2A regional.

In the semifinals Thursday, the Comets defeated Hillsboro 13-5. They will play for the regional title against Teutopolis at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The game at Greenville will be broadcast on WGEL and streamed at WGEL.com.

The Greenville-Hillsboro game was tied 1-1 after one inning. The Comets scored six runs in the second with Drew Frey driving in two with a triple, a two-run single by Jonathan Barnes, and a Logan Doll two-run homer.

Continuing to score in every inning, GHS posted one in the third, two in the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth.

Brock Nelson pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed only five hits and struck out five.

The winners totaled 13 hits with Frey having four, Doll three, and Grant McCullough two.

Doll drove on four runs, Barnes had three RBIs, Frey two, and Mason Johnson, Hunter Gray and McCullough, one each.

The Comets enter Saturday’s game with a 21-8 record.
