Panthers Track & Field Recognized By SLIAC

Greenville University’s Mitchell Hooten is a headliner on the 2019 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Track and Field All-Conference team.

Hooten, a senior at GU, was named the 2019 Field Athlete of the Year. He won the shot put title on April 27th with a distance of 49’11”. He also ranked 2nd in the discus and 5th in the hammer throw during the spring season.

His teammate, and fellow thrower, Nate Brown was named the SLIAC Field Newcomer of the Year. Brown, from Altamont, IL, placed in three events at the SLIAC Championships. He picked up gold in the discus and added bronze medals in the shot put and hammer throw.

A Greenville athlete also took home the SLIAC Track Athlete of the Year award for 2019. Rakim Murphy, from Fresno, CA, competed on the track for the first time in his collegiate career this year made his name quickly known this spring. He totaled four medals on April 27th, winning gold in the long jump and as a part of the 4×100 relay team.

In addition, Greenville University received the 2019 SLIAC Coaching Staff of the Year award.

Panthers making the SLIAC all-conference team include Rakim Murphy in the 100 Meter Dash & Long Jump, Jeremiah Davis in the 200 Meter Dash, Alex Fink in the 400 Meter Dash, John Mangold in the 800 Meter Run and 1500 Meter Run, Dylan Goodyear in the 5,000 Meter Run and 3,000 Steeplechase, Dylan Niswonger in the 10,000 Meter Run, David Martin in the 110 Meter Hurdle & Pole Vault, and Russell Lamb in the 110 Meter Hurdle.

Relay teams making the all-conference team include Jeremiah Davis, Alex Fink, Rakim Murphy, and Di’Mond Salmond in the 4×100 Relay and Jeremiah Davis, Alex Fink, Rakim Murphy, and Jackson Pierce in the 4×400 Relay.

Additional Panthers on the All-conference team include Colton Underwood and David Martin in the High Jump; Erick Garcia and Di’Mond Salmond in the Triple Jump; Mitchell Hooten, LC Washington, and Nate Brown in the Shot Put; Nate Brown, Mitchell Hooten, and LC Washington in the Discus, and Chris Crawford and Nate Brown in the Hammer.

Representing Greenville on the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team is Damien Cantrell.
