The five-day murder trial of Alexander Beccue in Fayette County Circuit Court concluded last Friday.

The 25-year-old St. Peter man was charged with two-counts of first degree murder in the August 11, 2017 shooting death of Joshua K. Smith of Ramsey.

The incident occurred in a Ramsey residence.

The trial began on June 17 and on day four the defense asked that a second degree murder charge be available to the jury. That request was granted by Judge Don Sheafor.

Beccue took the witness stand during the trial.

Friday, after closing arguments, the jury deliberated for two hours and 40 minutes, returning verdicts of guilty for second degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Beccue was previously incarcerated on an Effingham County felony drug offense.

The defendant’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 28 at 9 a.m.
