Sorento Woman Facing Alleged Murder & Obstruction Charges

Murder charges have been filed in Bond County Circuit Court against 41-year-old Wendy E. Denzler of rural Sorento.

She is charged with allegedly shooting 70-year-old Richard R. Blake on June 11.

Denzler faces five counts of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder and a count of obstructing justice.

The shooting allegedly occurred at a residence in the 1200 block of Old Ripley Road near Sorento. WGEL learned Denzler and Blake were allegedly girlfriend and boyfriend.

At 11:18 p.m. on June 11, the Bond County Sheriff’s Department received contact from a caller reporting a suicide involving a firearm. Deputies arrived on the scene and initiated an investigation. That led to Denzler being taken into custody three days later.

Charges were filed against her Monday. She is being held in the Bond County jail on $500,000 cash bond.

The first degree murder charges allege Denzler shot Blake in the head with a handgun. The second degree murder charge alleges the defendant, while committing a first degree murder, and while acting under sudden and intense passion, resulting from serious provocation, shot and killed Blake.

The obstructing justice charge alleges Denzler, with the intent to prevent her apprehension, knowingly furnished false information to a Bond County sergeant in that she reported Blake had committed suicide, knowing such information to be false.

The Bond County Sheriff’s Department expressed appreciation to the coroner’s and state’s attorney’s offices of Bond County and Illinois State Police crime scene investigators for their assistance in the case.

Denzler’s preliminary hearing in Bond County Circuit Court has been scheduled for July 11. The defendant made her first court appearance on the charges Monday and told Judge Christopher Bauer she plans to hire her own attorney.
