Crash Near Effingham Claims Three Lives

An accident on Interstate 70 claimed the lives of three residents of Wildwood, MO.

On Saturday, July 20, at 11:00 A.M. a Freightliner, a GMC, and a Peterbuilt were traveling eastbound on I-70 at mile marker 90, near Effingham. Traffic came to a stop and state police say the Freightliner failed to reduce its speed and struck the rear of the GMC. The GMC was then pushed into the semi trailer of the Peterbuilt and struck the concrete wall near the centerline, before coming to a stop between the wall and the Peterbuilt.

According to state police, a 4th vehicle was struck by the Peterbuilt, but allegedly did not stop.

Three occupants of the GMC, 59 year Old Virginia E. Abrams, 63 year old Matthew A. Murphy, and 61 year old Marleen E. Murphy, all of Wildwood, MO, were pronounced dead on the scene.

Two additional passengers in the GMC as well as one passenger in the Freightliner and one in the Peterbuilt were taken to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
