Betty Piper Swallers age 80 of Morton and Collinsville, formerly of Greenville, passed away on Tuesday at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2019 with Rev. John Heston officiating, in SmithGrove Cemetery. The family welcome friends and family joining them at the service. Memorials may be made to her family.
Betty Jean Piper, the daughter of Samuel “Sammie” Piper and Gladys Flowers Piper, was born on October 16, 1938 in Glasgow, Kentucky. Her family moved to Greenville in her youth and she attended the Greenville Public Schools and graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1958.
Betty and Leo Swallers were united in marriage on March 19, 1966 and enjoyed just over 17 years together before his death on October 26, 1983. They are the parents of five children who survive: Betty Jean (Brett) Newell of LaSalle, IL, Sohphia Swallers of Peoria, Lucille (William) Dilling of Ladd, IL., Robert Swallers of Spring Valley, IL, Leo Swallers of Collinsville, 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Betty’s twin sister Nettie Seaton of Maryville, brothers William (Carol) Piper of Alton, John (Anna) Piper of Greenville, 19 step grandchildren and 16 step great-grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo, and three step-children: Roy Leo Swallers, Addie Swallers, and Nellie Jean Hinkley.
Betty was a “Lioness” in the Lions club of Spring Valley, raised her family, cooked in various restaurants, enjoyed making homemade cards, quilting, crocheting, and making jewelry for Charity.
