For many Greenville area residents Tuesday afternoon, there was a whole lotta shakin’ going on, and it was just due to the storms.
Because of the weather, pilots of three new U.S. Army Chinook helicopters requested and received permission to land at Greenville Airport to wait out the storm.
Greenville Airport Manager Larry Kleiner said there was a a total of about 15 crew members with the helicopters, which were being flown from Alabama to Alaska.
Local residents felt their buildings shake and heard the roar of the helicopters when they took off from the airport around 3 p.m. Each helicopter was powered by two, 6,000 horsepower turbine engines.
They left Greenville en route to Iowa for the night.
Crew members were here about two hours and enjoyed the hospitality from the airport staff, Kleiner reported.
