Alfred J. “Al” Hammer

Alfred J. “Al” Hammer, age 74 of Trenton, IL, died Friday, August 30, 2019, at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, MO.

He was born on Tuesday, February 20, 1945, in Highland, IL, the son of Alfred and Mary (nee Kniepmann) Hammer.

On Friday, April 03, 1970, he married Ann C. Hammer nee Turner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Trenton, IL, who survives.

He was a member of U. S. W. Local 50, Granite City, IL; Trenton Sportman’s Club, Trenton, IL; former member-St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Trenton, IL.

Born in Highland, IL; grew up on a farm north of Trenton, IL. He graduated from Mater Dei Catholic High School, Breese, IL, in 1963. He attended St. Henry Seminary, Belleville, IL, graduated with an Associate Degree. He worked for Helvetia Township; helped on the family farm and for 44 years worked at Granite City Steel (Blast Furnace). He retired from Granite City Steel in 2009 when the plant shut down. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, the neighborhood gathering most mornings at the Chicken House, St. Morgan and the US Steel Workers Retirees monthly meeting.

Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, September 06, 2019, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.

Memorial Service will be at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 06, 2019, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, with Rev. Scott Busacker, Pastor, Hope Lutheran Church, Highland, IL, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grandchildren’s Education Fund or Disabled American Veterans.
