Illinois State Police report a fatal accident Sunday just before 4 PM on I-70 in Effingham County.
According to police, a passenger car driven by 68 year old James Barnes, Jr., of Lawrenceville, GA; a pickup truck driven by 31 year old Stephen Long, of Saint Thomas, PA; and a semi driven by 44 year old Corey Meyer, of Crocker, MO; were stopped in the right lane of traffic Eastbound on I-70 due to traffic being backed up before a construction zone when another pickup ran into the rear end of one vehicle, causing a three car pile-up.
The passenger car, driven by 68 year old James Barnes, Jr., of Lawrenceville, GA, was the first one struck. Barnes was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the pickup who crashed into the other vehicles, 69 year old Billy Barksdale, of Gene Autry, OK, was cited for alleged failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
