Laverne B. Ilges, age 94, of Breese, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019 at Breese Nursing Home.
He was born November 20, 1924 in Breese, a son of the late Bernard and Bernice, nee Timmermann, Ilges.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Ilges; brother, John Ilges; father- in-law and mother-in-law, George and Catherine, nee Reilmann, Poelker; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph Kruse, Wib Kruse, Dorothy Meyer, Al Poelker, George Poelker, and Marcella Rolfingsmeier.
Surviving are his wife Florence, nee Poelker, Ilges of Breese, whom he married November 19, 1946 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese; children, David (Terri) Ilges of St. Louis, MO and Susan (Michael) Borgelt of Denver, CO; daughter-in-law, Loretta Ilges of Houston, TX; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Shadegg of Breese; and nieces and nephews.
Laverne was a veteran of the United States Army, serving 1943-1946 (WWII). He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was in the first platoon that went to Auschwitz to free the multinational prisoners of war. After returning from the war, Laverne worked in law enforcement and retired as the Clinton County Sheriff serving 1970-1974. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese and Breese American Legion Post 252.
Memorial Mass will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Patrick Peter presiding. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese.
Memorials may be made to the Sons of the American Legion Post 252 and will be received at the church or through Moss Funeral Home in Breese who is serving the Ilges family.
