A shooting in Hillsboro has left a woman in the hospital and a Litchfield man behind bars.
WAND TV in Decatur reports police were called Friday just before 11 AM to the scene of a car crash near the intersection of Fairground Avenue and Seymore in Hillsboro. The woman involved in the crash had been shot and was being tended to by residents of the area.
Hillsboro Police Chief Randy Leetham reported the woman was shot at the Hillsboro Free Methodist Church, a few blocks away from where she crashed her car.
The victim was transported to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
A half hour after the woman was taken to the hospital, 69 year old David L. Chesser, of Litchfield, was reportedly arrested while trying to gain access to the Free Methodist Church. WAND reports Chesser was allegedly in possession of a handgun.
Beckemeyer School, located near the church, was about to release students for an early dismissal around the time of the arrest and was put on lockdown before students were sent home.
Chesser was arrested without incident.
