The Greenville Comets remained undefeated for the football season with a 41-34 win at Carlinville Friday night.
After a wild first half, the Comets played very well defensively in the final two quarters to pull out the victory.
It was 28-28 at the half. In the third period, the GHS squad regained the lead on a two-yard run by Jack Woods. The extra point kick was no good, leaving the Comets with only a 6-point margin.
Carlinville scored its final TD just 42 seconds into the fourth quarter. It remained 34-34 when Isaac Green blocked the extra point kick.
The Comets posted the winning touchdown with 7:27 left in the contest. Green scored on a nine-yard run around right end. Logan Doll’s extra point kick ended the scoring for the night.
Carlinville threatened to score with less than five minutes to play, but the Comet defense stopped the Cavaliers six yards from the goal line.
Isaac Green had over 190 yards on offense, 120 of them on the ground. He scored three touchdowns.
Jack Woods ran for over 130 yards and scored two TDs.
Quarterback Wil Harnetiaux threw two touchdown passes, one to Doll and one to Green.
The football Comets have a 3-0 record and are tied for first place in the South Central Conference with Vandalia and Pana. They play their homecoming game this Friday night against Hillsboro.
