BCHD Warns Of Pertussis

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, from January 1 to September 30, 2019, 389 individual cases and three outbreaks of pertussis have been reported in Illinois.

If infected with pertussis, infants, small children, and those with weakened immune systems may develop severe, life threatening illness.

The Bond County Health Department advises that vaccination is the best preventative measure against infection. Parents should ensure that their children are up-to-date on all their immunizations including Tdap. Parents should also encourage their child to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, to wash their hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizer often, and not to share foods, drinks or anything that will go in the mouth.

For more information or to schedule a vaccination contact the health department at 618-664-1442.
