The Greenville Comets earned their seventh football win of the season Friday night at Gillespie.
The 52-12 victory sets up a big game this Friday night at Don Stout Field as the 7-1 Comets battle the 8-0 Vandalia Vandals. A win by the Comets means they tie for the South Central Conference championship.
The Comets never trailed against Gillespie. They led 20-6 after one quarter 33-12 at halftime and had a 40-point margin going into the fourth quarter.
Isaac Green scored four touchdowns, two on pass catches for 17 and 43 yards. He returned a punt 76 yards for a TD.
The other came late in the second quarter on a trick play. Quarterback Wil Harnetiaux completed a pass over the middle to Tommy Baker, who lateraled the ball to Green. The play totaled 55 yards and put six more points on the scoreboard for the Comets.
Jack Woods scored two rushing touchdowns of 12 and 18 yards, Logan Doll had an eight-yard touchdown run and Jason Zeeb returned a fumble 65 yards for a TD.
The Comets ran the ball for 248 yards in the game. Woods finished with 126.
Harnetiaux completed 10 of 18 passes for 156 yards. Baker caught five passes for 62 yards and Green grabbed two for 61 yards.
Defensively, Woods had seven tackles, and Green and Jaylon Betts came up with pass interceptions.
Friday night’s game at Greenville is Senior Night and is the annual Pink Bowl contest between the Comets and Vandalia.
