Eugene (Gene) Herbert Jolliff, age 94 formerly of Greenville, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 at a Veteran’s Home in Lawton, Oklahoma. The home was near Ft. Sill Military Base.
A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home.
Mr. Jolliff was born on March 8, 1925 in Centralia, Illinois. The son of Herbert and Chrissie Jolliff.
He enlisted into the Navy October 28, 1943 and was honorably discharged January 12, 1946. While stationed at Norfolk, Virginia Naval Base he married Dorothy Ruth Price on May 20, 1944. Shortly thereafter he returned to the South Pacific aboard LST588. His ship was involved in the battle to defeat the Empire of Japan. He was at the Battle of Iwo Jima where his ship off loaded marines and equipment onto the beaches. LST 588 later ferried troops, supplies and even Japanese Prisoners to other locations such as Guam, Okinawa, Japan and China.
Returning from the war he started his family. They lived in central, Illinois for a few years then moved to Carlinville, Illinois around 1955-1965. He was a salesman, and after landing a job with Moorman Feeds, he moved his family to Greenville, Illinois. He became friends with many farmers in the area. His family were members of the Greenville Free Methodist Church.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, oldest daughter Gayla Greenwalt of Carlinville, Illinois.
Surviving are his sons: Dan Jolliff of Houston, Texas, Rod Jolliff of Pocahontas, Illinois, Kurt Jolliff of Winfield, Missouri, Brant Jolliff and wife Wendy of Lawton, Oklahoma, daughter Gwyn Jolliff-Blake and husband Mike of Chicago, Illinois. Siblings Gail Jolliff and wife Marlene of Centralia, Illinois, Mary Ann Simpson and husband Jim of St. Louis, Missouri. Grandfather to 13 and great-grandfather of 16.
