The Greenville High School varsity and junior varsity teams have begun another year of competitions.
Tuesday, the varsity Comets hosted Carlinville and Gillespie, winning on the last question of the match against Carlinville, 250-230. Greenville also defeated Gillespie 310-100 as team members Malachi McElvain and Emma Nord performed well with four tossups apiece.
The varsity Comets also have wins this season over Litchfield, Hillsboro, Staunton, and Mater Dei, with losses to Granite City and Carlinville.
Coach Ryan D’Arcy said the junior varsity team is made up of mostly first year players. On Tuesday, the JV squad earned its first win, 200-140, over Gillespie and fell by just 20 points to Carlinville.
Leading the team was veteran team member Justin Matthews with 90 points. Newcomer, Katie Peppler, did well with 40 points.
