H. John Liss

H. John Liss, age 75, went home to Jesus, November 1, 2019, under the compassionate care of hospice staff at Greenville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

John was born November 10, 1943 in Los Angeles, CA to Harold and Florence (Chamberlain) Liss. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, IA and attended Iowa State University. In 1971 John proposed to his sweetheart, Linda Wildes, and on March 25, 1972 he made her a Liss. They started a family with a daughter, Jen, in 1974 and completed it with a son, Dan, in 1982. John was especially good with young children, and the favorite Uncle of many.

John was privileged to demonstrate his love for Jesus by working at a number of Christian organizations: InterVarsity, Fairview Baptist Home, World Evangelical Fellowship and Greenville College. He loved spending time at his Aunt Myrtle and Uncle Kenneth’s Iowa farm with his cousins. As he got older, he’d stay for the entire summer, to help milk the cows and bring in the harvest.

In his early 30’s, John sang in a traveling group of eight, which included his wife. He enjoyed taking drives, whether it was a road trip for a family camp audit, or just to see what stores were open Christmas day. John passed along his love of penguins, Louis L’Amour books and silliness to his family. His years of living in Greenville turned him into an avid Comets and Panthers fan, particularly football and baseball. John was an admirer of John Stott, highly polished dress shoes, and a giver of endless tickles and airplane rides.

John is survived by his wife Linda Lou (Wildes) Liss and his children Jennifer Lynn Liss and Daniel Joshua Liss, his daughter-in-law Katrina Joy (Lopez) Liss and his grandchildren Judah Thomas Liss, Malachi Daniel Liss and Havana Joy Ruth Liss. He is also survived by his sister Joan Liss.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harold Walter Liss and Florence Rose (Chamberlain) Liss.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 4 from 5pm to 7pm and the Celebration of Life
Service will be held Tuesday, November 5 at 11am. Both will take place at Greenville Free Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to The Liss Family or Greenville Free Methodist Church.
