James E. Thompson, 83, of Highland, IL, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2019 after a long illness. He was a former resident of Ottumwa, Iowa and Alamo Palms Park, Alamo, Texas.
James was born on January 5, 1936 in Belknap, Iowa to Wilbur and Wilda (nee Smock) Thompson. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1954. On April 6, 1959, he married Phyllis Sutton.
James was a Veteran, serving in the US Army at Fort Amador, Canal Zone. He was an employee of John Deere Ottumwa Works for 29 years. In retirement, James worked for 15 years, in the campground of the Iowa State Fair.
He was active in coaching Pee Wee, Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball for many years and was a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan. He was a past member and served on the Board of Directors of the Izaak Walton League of Ottumwa, IA. While retired in Alamo Palms Park, he was shuffleboard chairman, and served as a member of the Texas Shuffleboard Association in the Expert Class.
James is survived by his wife, Phyllis Thompson, Highland, IL; daughter, Missy (Brian) Gorniak, Glen Carbon, IL; four granddaughters, Jaclyn, Meghan, Lexi and Shelby; a sister, Betty McConnell, Bloomfield, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Wilda Thompson; son, David K. Thompson; and a brother, Gerry Thompson.
Per his wishes, cremation will be accorded, with a private family burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Iowa, at a later date.
