James L. Smith, or “Hair Bear” or “Jail” as he was known, age 78, passed away at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Sunday, November 17, 2019.
Mr. Smith was born in Deventer, Missouri on August 15, 1941, to the late Thatus Smith Sr. and Bedella (Walker) Smith. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sharon Smith; a daughter – Kathy Washington; hosts of step-children; his brothers – Luther Smith, Jewell Smith, Thatus Smith, Jr., Gary Smith, and Larry Smith; his sisters – Stella Smith, Thelma Snith, Linda Suggs, Shirley Burke, Fannie Smith, and Irene Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings – Delmar Smith, Audrey Smith, and Jerry Smith.
James Smith accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior on November 10, 1991 at Second Baptist Church in Carlyle under Pastor Jerome Chambers. He was the joker of the family and loved playing music, especially the blues. He enjoyed playing the guitar, playing pool, and dancing. James worked at Rail Bearing in Carlyle for many years.
A Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Zieren Funeral Home, with Rev. Theodore Macon, officiating. Interment will follow at Carlyle Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. on Saturday morning prior to the service.
