With the holiday season approaching, plans have begun for the 2019 Bond County Salvation Army bell-ringing campaign.
WGEL’s Jeff Leidel talked with Mary Young, bell-ringing coordinator for Bond County, about when kettles will be out, this year’s goal, and the need for volunteers to ring bells.
She said the program begins on Monday, November 25th. Each day has 10 one-hour time slots that start at 9:30 AM. The effort ends at noon on Christmas Eve. Locations are Capri IGA, Dollar General, and Buchheit.
Young said last year’s goal of $25,000 was surpassed and this year’s goal has been set at $26,000.
To volunteer for a bell-ringing shift, call Mary Young at 553-4353 or visit the Bradford Community Room on Wednesday, November 20th. A few computers will be set up there and you can register online.

Young said while many groups have already taken time slots, but there are still many to be filled. There will also be some ringing in Mulberry Grove.
Susan Bryant, welfare secretary for the county chapter, was asked who benefits from donations. She said Bond County residents who need assistance with things like rent, power bills, or food benefit from the funds. People in domestic violence situations have also received assistance with lodging.
Bryant said many people are one problem away from having a lot of financial difficulty. She said people can get behind on bills when they have an issue like car problems or work missed due to illness and they need help getting over that problem.
