Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith has appointed Chris Palmer as chief deputy.
Smith said Palmer brings a lot of training and experience to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
A graduate of Pana High School and a U.S. Air Force veteran, Palmer began his law enforcement career in 1992 as a Vandalia police officer. After six and one-half years, he joined the Illinois Secretary of State Police as an investigator.
Palmer is certified as a hostage negotiator, and electronic criminal surveillance officer, and was on the Secretary of State’s bomb squad.
He retired from the Secretary of State Police in February of 2019. Palmer has worked part-time for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy and court security officer.
